The History of Tempe, Arizona
Tempe encourages diversity, and the citys history reflects this. The Salt River Valley was settled by Hispanic immigrants originally from Mexico. After Arizona joined the United States, these same immigrants helped build two irrigation canals that were important to the development of farming in the valley.
Tempe was a small farm town for a long time, but this changed after World War 2, which saw an explosion in expansion and migration. Many of the people who invested in Tempe real estate were veterans from the war, and the town was proud to welcome them. By 1974 Tempe had expanded to its current size through annexation, and because of the land-locked nature of the city, most of its residential districts are now fully developed.
