About Prescott, Az
Prescott, Arizona is a great small town, with small town values, located in Central Arizona, about 95 miles northwest of Phoenix, and 90 miles southwest of Flagstaff. Sitting at an elevation of almost 5400 feet above sea level, Prescott is Arizona’s version of the “Mile-High City”, and offers four distinct seasons, making it attractive and “homey” to transferees from the East and Midwest. With the largest coverage area of Ponderosa Pine trees in the world, the region is picturesque, and a sharp contrast to the more desert-like terrain in other areas of the state.
The town of Prescott was incorporated in 1881, after having been established in 1864, when President Abraham Lincoln sent a unit of Federal Troops to protect the gold and silver found in the area. In 1900, a horribly destructive fire burned Prescott to the ground; but it was reconstructed, and many of the edifices and homes you see today are a link to the past. Today, the older residential streets are lined with tall trees and pitched-roof frame houses, including lovely Victorian homes.
One of the most popular sections of the town, for both “townies” and visitors alike, is “Whiskey Row”, in the heart of downtown Prescott. The historians and “old-timers” claim that this colorful and historic street was, at one time, almost five blocks long, and lined with nothing but a series of saloons! “Legend” says that the volunteer fire squads were staffed by nothing but the patrons from Whiskey Row (which must have been quite a scene when the fire bells went off, and the “rescue” patrols came stammering out of the bars!)
Prescott Real Estate
Prescott, and the surrounding towns of Prescott Valley, Dewey and Humboldt comprise an ever-widening area, which has become increasingly popular for second-homes (a great escape from the intense heat of the Phoenix area in the Summer!). The local economy is buoyed by the service and tourist industry, as well as some manufacturing facilities. If you are looking for a small-town, with a moderate climate, Prescott may be the “Home” for you!
