Flagstaff was named on Independence Day in 1876, when a centennial flag was flown from the tallest pine tree. Today, Flagstaff serves as a major link between routes I-40 and I-17, Highway 89 to Utah and Highway 180 to the marvelous Grand Canyon.
Just 85 miles northwest of Flagstaff the south rim of the Grand Canyon is about an hour and a half drive. Other notable close destinations in or around Flagstaff include: Meteor Crater (the worlds largest), Lowell Observatory, Lake Powell, Wupatki Ruins, Sedona and the Flagstaff Arboretum.
Flagstaff is a serene small town that is home to Northern Arizona University.
